Forkhead box A3 (foxa3) is a member of the fox gene family, a functionally diverse group of transcription regulators. The fox gene family has been evolutionarily conserved and plays a role in such biological processes as development, differentiation and metabolism. In mammals, the hepatocyte nuclear factors 3alpha, -beta and -gamma (HNF-3) are respectively encoded by foxa1, -a2 and -a3. Gene expression studies have demonstrated that HNF3 proteins play a critical role in regulation of early-onset type 2 diabetes genes and of glucagons transcription and pancreatic alpha-cell function. In zebrafish embryos, FoxA3 and Goosecoid coexpressed at the dorsal blastula margin are necessary for the determination of anterior neural fate.
