Heat Shock Protein 30 (HSP30)

In response to adverse changes in their environment, cells from many organisms increase the expression of a class of proteins referred to as heat shock or stress proteins. One class of stress proteins, termed the small heat shock proteins (sHSPs), is comprised of a diverse group of proteins from ~15 to >30 kD. Hsp30, a sHSP, is expressed in several fish species, such as salmon, rainbow trout (1) and desert fish (2,3,4), as well as Xenopus after exposure to stressors (eg. heat and heavy metals). The function of Hsp30 has not been well characterized, but one plausible role of this protein is as a molecular chaperone. Evolutionary studies have shown that salmon and desert fish Hsp30 are more closely related to Xenopus Hsp30 than mammalian Hsp27 (2). This affinity purified antibody detects a 30kD protein, corresponding to the apparent molecular mass of Hsp30 on SDS-PAGE immunoblots, in samples from rainbow trout, chinook salmon and chum salmon origin.
