CD1a, a 45kD cell-surface glycoprotein, is a novel member of MHC class I family. It is associated with beta2-microglobulin and is predominantly expressed in thymocytes and dendritic cells. It belongs to the Group I CD1 isoforms and is involved in the presentation of self and foreign lipid antigens to T-cells. CD1a is often used as a marker for dendritic cells. Pathophysiological role of CD1a has been associated with autoimmune disorders and malignancies.
