p140Cap, also known as P140, KIAA1684 or SNIP (SNAP25-interacting protein), is a 1,055 amino acid protein that localizes to both the cytoplasm and the cytoskeleton and exists as multiple alternatively spliced isoforms. Interacting with the N-terminal region of SNAP 25, p140Cap functions to delay the onset of cell spreading during the early stages of cell adhesion and may also be involved in calcium-dependent exocytosis from specific cell types. The gene encoding p140Cap maps to human chromosome 17, which comprises over 2.5% of the human genome and encodes over 1,200 genes. Two key tumor suppressor genes are associated with chromosome 17, namely, p53 and BRCA1. Tumor suppressor p53 is necessary for maintenance of cellular genetic integrity by moderating cell fate through DNA repair versus cell death.
