HER2 has been implicated in numerous functions including normal and aberrant development in a variety of tissues. It is a ligand-less tyrosine kinase receptor of the ErbB family that is frequently overexpressed in breast cancer. It has been shown that HER2 undergoes proteolytic cleavage resulting in the release of the extracellular domain and the production of a phosphorylated membrane bound domain.
