Vang-like 1 protein is a novel human homologue of Drosophila Van Gogh:Strabismus. The Vang-like 1 gene consists of at least 7 exons, and encodes a protein with four transmembrane domains and the C-terminal ser/thr -X-Val motif. Studies shows that the expression of the protein is significantly up-regulated in gastric cancer cell lines MKN28, MKN74, pancreatic cancer cell lines BxPC-3, PSN-1 and Hs766T. The protein may serve as an effector mediating the intestinal trefoil factor (ITF) healing response of the intestinal mucosa. The protein also serves as a diagnostic marker for hepatocellular carcinoma as well as a potential molecular target for development of novel therapeutic drugs. The pathological role of the protein has been identified in neural tube defects (NTD). Human Vang-like 1 gene maps to chromosome 1p11-p13.1.
